Chilean sea bass/Patagonian Toothfish: Dissostichus eleginoides

Synonyms: Chilean Seabass(USACan) Merluza negra (Per. Ur.), Legine australe (Fr.), Mero (Jp. Sp), Bacalao de profundidad (Ch.)

I was invited as consultant to join a team of researchers from the Araucana institute in Chile (http://www.laaraucanaeduca.cl/) that is developing hatchery methods for this highly valued, deep water, circum-Antarctic fish. By the time I joined the project a sizeable broodstock had been caught and had been domesticated in land based tanks. A few of these fish were showing signs of maturation. Over the next two seasons we obtained eggs, which were incubated and hatched following which we developed protocols for larval rearing and weaning onto dry diets.
